Faculty of Maritime Technology and Transport

Department of Air Conditioning and Refrigerated Transport

The laboratory is specialized in research in the field of energy efficiency improvement in refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pumps. The research concerns both land devices and those used in transportation, especially marine systems.

Currently led investigations cover:

  • Modelling, experimental investigations and development of defrosting systems - the development and investigation of innovatory solutions of defrosting systems of evaporators in refrigerating devices and heat pumps permits on: the decrease in energy demand of defrosting process, shortening the time of defrosting, the extension of effective operation time of devices, the improvement of thermal efficiency, the improvement of energy efficiency coefficients of devices. Currently, the investigations of a new way of defrosting in application to air source heat pumps, refrigerators and refrigerating installations of cooled chambers are led, which permits on elimination of pause in refrigerating process and limitation of energy demand indispensable to the process of defrosting.
  • Heat recovery in air conditioning, compression refrigerating devices and heat pumps - the investigations of heat recovery concern particularly the recovery of heat contained in condensate from dehumidified air, formed in the process of sweating and frosting the surface of air coolers in air conditioning and refrigerating devices, resulting in the improvement of energy efficiency of refrigerating circulations. Technical solutions permitting on heat recovery from the condensate, that could be used in domestic refrigerators, refrigerating systems and air conditioning plants, are studied at present.
  • Recovery of waste cold in refrigerating devices, air conditioning and heat pumps - the investigations concern analyses of possibility and efficiency of the recovery of waste cold of processes and devices. The identification and improving of existing solutions is carried on, as well as the development of new possibilities of energy recovery.
  • Research and development of thermoelectric cooling devices and ice makers - energy efficiency and the optimization of dynamic characteristics of thermoelectric devices, designed and built both for individual and commercial use, is investigated, what permits on e.g. to opinion on their competitiveness in relation to compression devices.

The team also conducts the evaluations and measurements concerning the operation of heat pumps, air conditioning and refrigerating systems. Training and certification of HVAC&R specialists is also carried on.
